YEAR 1: ORAL PROGRAM
Year 1: Oral Program
 
Teach this text in four-lesson units, covering two such units per quarter.  The ninth week of the quarter, practice all of the catechism articles covered to that point, on a daily basis.  
 
“Practicing the catechism” means reading the number and the question of the catechism article to your student and the student READING the response out loud to you.  The catechism will be memorized next year, using the same text; this year is used to bring familiarity with the style, vocabulary and meaning of the catechism.

 


 
Day 1 a, Practice the prior 1 to 3 catechism lessons of the present unit being taught.
Day 1 b, Read the new lesson, catechism and chapter work out loud to your student, sitting next to him so that he can read along with you.  Point to the sections as you read them to help him keep up.  (Reading the material out loud BEFORE the student works through the lesson helps seat the information and vocabulary to be used in the child’s mind before he has to use it.  The child will approach the lesson with much more confidence and much less anxiety.)

Day 2 a, Practice the prior 1 to 3 catechism lessons of the present unit being taught.
Day 2 b, Read the new lesson out loud again.  (As reading ability allows, you may ask your student to read the lesson out loud to you.)
Day 2 c, Practice the new catechism articles.

Day 3 c, Have the student answer the chapter questions orally and locate where he finds the answers in the chapter.  (Drawing specific information out of a text is a skill to be taught and learned, hence the reason we recommend you have the child show where he finds his answers in the lesson.  Be very patient as he searches through the lesson.)

Day 4 c, Read the Bible readings given at the end of the chapter.

 


YEAR 2: INDEPENDENT STUDY & MEMORIZATION
Year 2: Independent Study & Memorization
 
Last year, this text was used to bring familiarity with the style, vocabulary and meaning of the catechism; this year the catechism should be memorized and the chapter reviews and quizzes should be done independently and in written form by the student.
 
We recommend teaching the text in *four-lesson units, covering two such units per quarter.  The ninth week of the quarter, practice ALL of the catechism articles covered to that point, on a daily basis.  “Practicing the catechism” means reading the number and the question of the catechism question to your student and the student READING the response out loud to you.
