BOOKS AND MATERIALS

New St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism, No. 2

  • Author: Rev. Bennet Kelley, CP
  • ISBN: 089942242X

Catholic Book Publ., NY; 1962, 1969; Imprimatur; 264 pgs; 38 lessons; prayers; dictionary; index; appendices

This Baltimore Catechism worktext teaches religion, logical constructs, Scripture, prayers, etc., and models formal grammar.

We use this text for two years.  Progress through it in 20-minute periods, three to five days per week.  Read aloud all Scripture—the strength of this program this year (besides the formal grammar and logic modeled); this may take weeks for some lessons.  Take the time—it’s worth it!  Do the end-of-chapter discussion questions aloud, but have the student do the rest of the exercises independently after discussion of the lesson.  At the least, read/repeat daily the prayers and hymns at the end of the chapters; at the most, memorize them.  (A happy medium: memorize some, using recitation and written tests.  Don’t be afraid to trade off the written exercises for written prayers and hymns.)

A simpler alternative to The New St. Joseph's Baltimore Catechism #2.  One to two lessons per week; read the text one day, do the activities the next.

For a fine beginning for art appreciation, cut out the masterpiece reproductions in this book, rubber-cement them to attractive paper and enclose them in a large, sturdy binder.  Write little notes about the piece and rubber-cement them in clusters to attractive paper, tucking them into the binder behind the picture.  Keep this binder easily available and add to it as often as
