“A comprehensive art program designed to involve the student in the creative process while developing observational skills.”

Using a different American art print as the basis for each lesson, Ellis teaches the elements of art—space, line, shape, texture, value, form—and art composition—balance, rhythm, depth, perspective, proportion, unity, contrast—guiding the student through picture analysis, art analysis and sketching.  Works best for Grades 3 – 12.

Four-part lessons with detailed instructions: (1a) Conceptual application:  building a visual vocabulary; (1b) Expressive application: observation and creative exploration; (2) Practical application: looking at art; 3) Technical application: techniques and materials; (4) Practiced application: original work.  Each lesson takes two weeks to complete, and includes art instruction, art appreciation instruction and a sketching project that the students need to spend time on daily for 20 minutes or so for three to five days per week.  Do Unit 1 over two weeks time, then Unit 2 and so on.  Teach half of this book this year, and save the other half for another American history cycle done later.
