Horizons Math 5

COURSE NOTES

Advanced math program; colorful and uncrowded; spiral approach.  Volume numbers do not correspond to grade levels.  The worktext format eliminates transcribing errors.  It contains 160 lessons plus regular review tests and final tests—too many lessons to complete in a year.  Progress from one volume to the next (until you complete the series, then the student moves nicely into Saxon 87, then Saxon Algebra 1/2 pre-algebra).  If the student needs to be self-teaching—meaning you don’t want to TEACH math to him—move him down a level.
 
45-55 minutes daily, with a break during the lesson.  Let the student complete as much of the lesson as he can independently; teach the rest from the teacher’s manual.  Consider setting a timer for 35-40 minutes and having the student work through as much of the lesson as possible.  When the timer sounds, have him checkmark his errors from the answer key.  (He’s young; respectfully check his checkmarks.)  The NEXT day, have him re-work his errors.  Then, set the timer again for 35-40 minutes of new material, having him pick up where he left off the day before; when the timer sounds have him checkmark his errors, etc.  Math can take between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how careful the student is--he’s in control of the
