COURSE OVERVIEW

Math U See Geometry

COURSE NOTES

MATHEMATICS: General math, transition math/pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and various advanced math programs are available to the homeschooler. Math is required of all students each year. High school students should aim for four or more hours of math each week (36 – 45 hours per quarter).

Recommended junior high and high school math sequence is “Math-U-See Pre-Algebra” (or “Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra” or even “Saxon Algebra ½”), then “Jacobs’ Elementary Algebra” for 2 to 3 semesters, then “Jacobs’ Geometry” for 2 to 3 semesters, taught to deep mastery levels (rather than simply performance levels). Higher level math is recommended for those students with a gift or a tutor (!) for it, or consider a community college class, even. Most effective over the years have been Paul Foerster’s “Algebra & Trigonometry”, “Math U See”, “Keyboard Enterprises”, “Scott Foresman UCSMP Math”, and "Teaching Textbooks." Notes and course outlines for items recommended for your student are attached to the blue cover sheet with your student’s name on it.

To place a student in a math text correctly, begin the year by assigning one unit test or review per day. When the student begins missing two or more problems because he does not understand the steps or concepts, back up to the beginning lesson for that test unit and begin the student there in the text. If a text is wrapped around to the following school year, this testing sequence should be repeated from the beginning of the text to find the student’s most comfortable starting point for the new year, encouraging deep review.

Credit Information for Students in Grades 9 - 12: Credits awarded according to hours reported; 37.5 hours = 2.5cr; 75 hours = 5.0cr; max. 2.5cr per quarter; max. 2.5cr per work sample. 1 lesson = 0.33cr.

Scheduling Suggestions: 5x/wk for 50 to 75 minutes
