COURSE OVERVIEW

Prima Latina

COURSE NOTES

One 30 to 40 minute instructional day weekly, and about 20 minutes of daily drill.

From the teacher manual:  Prima Latina is a preparatory course for Cheryl Lowe’s Latina Christiana.  It is intended for teachers with no background in Latin…. The course was designed for students who are still becoming familiar with English grammar but are competent readers.  Its goal is to teach and reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of speech while introducing Latin vocabulary and grammar….  The course teaches students seven parts of speech, 125 Latin vocabulary words, numbers 1 through 10, basic constellations, and simple introductions to tenses, derivatives, conjugations, and declensions.

We use this program to introduce Latin, but even more so to solidify a student’s basic English grammar skill, and help the entire family learn what tenses, derivatives, conjugations and declensions are—in English grammar as well as Latin!  This is a very clear, concise, easy-to-use program.  Their stated goals for the course are to 1) learn basic Latin alphabet and pronunciation of vowels and consonant sounds, 2) pronounce, spell and translate approximately 125 Latin words, 3) learn 25 practical Latin expressions and 4 prayers in full, 4) learn numbers 1 through 10, 5) learn names of popular constellations, 6) understand concept of “derivatives”—English words that are derived from Latin, 7) learn to identify the basic parts of speech including verbs, nouns, preposition, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions; recognize that “conjugating” is associated with verbs; recognize that “declining” is associated with nouns; memorize 1st declension noun endings, memorize 1st conjugations verb endings.

For Week 1 of the year, Mom, use the class periods to read through the teacher guide information.  For Week 2 of the year, read through the informational material from the teacher manual with your students and prepare for the year’s teaching, together.  Week 3 of the year begin working the five-lesson unit, one lesson per week, as per the book’s suggested course plan on Page xi.  Use the week following the fifth lesson in each unit to review and test.  Then start the next five-lesson unit, and so on.

For quarterly reporting, enter the beginning and ending lessons you covered for the quarter.  For a work sample, copy the latest lesson or test.

Scheduling Suggestions: 3x/wk for 30min
