COURSE OVERVIEW

18 Week Course Plan: Constitution of the United States: An Introduction, Floyd G. Cullop

COURSE NOTES

The following is one possible weekly course plan for studying U.S. Government and The Constitution with the text The Constitution of the United States: An Introduction by Floyd G. Cullop.  This plan is paced for the middle-schooler to complete in one semester at a leisurely pace; the high schooler may do two lessons per week to complete the course in one quarter, earning 2.5 high school credits.

The student is conducted through the material once, working to master the vocabulary needed to understand The Constitution, then again, working to master the content of the material, and learning to locate information in various ways and resources.  For vocabulary flashcards, have the student enter the word or phrase on one side of an index card and the simplified definition on the other side.  Read and show the definition to the student and have them give the correct word.  The posters assigned can be as simple as reproduced charts added to the student’s binder or notebook.  “Check Yourself” quizzes should be done from memory; you will need to copy these pages or somehow secure the pages to help the student resist temptation.  If you choose to

Additional Notes:  The assignment is talking about the research and resource materials listed on page 36 of the text.  Make a note card apiece about what the resource is, where to find it, what you would use it for.  It's a great assignment to be done in the local library with a librarian.  Most librarians can rise to the occasion on the spot; some students have made appointments with their librarian so the librarian is better prepared.  The assignment can be done easily independently, but it is a much richer and easier process to be done with a librarian.
